Artist's Comments

This was created with Blender, a free 3D program.

I was playing around with curves and created a pawn, I liked the look of it and decided to create the whole chess boar and the rest of the pieces in the same style.

Some post production in Photoshop and Gimp.

hmm, nice, don't think you should show the hdri backround though, it looks out of place, also you could do some depth of field on the chess peices to add depth (this may also make the backround seem better composted) also you may consider playing with the reflectiiosn so it isn't uniform across the whole object, ie at right angles to the camer the reflection amount changes, this would add some depth to the pieces...
but otherwise not bad :aww:

Thank you for the feedback and suggestions they are really helpful.

And for some reason so few people notice my artworks, that it is hard to get any feedback at all.

The background is story of its own, I tried to pick a background that would create good reflections and would look interesting and realistic. The monotone background did not do either.

So basically I ended up using a plane with a simple picture for color mapping, as well as similar picture for environmental mapping. It did not render correctly so I used photoshop to recreate and blur it as well as blur the table that looked completely flat for some reason.

Now that I know what to correct, I will try to re-render and let the computer calculate the blur.

Also, I think splitting the pawn in several parts may cause blender to create better reflection maps, so I will try doing that.

Thank you again for your help.

This has a nice camera angle. Did you try what MattCarter said about the reflection amounts at different angles? Just asking since it would be a cool thing to play with if Blender can do it. Anyway, I like the reflections. :)

Thank you. I am glad you liked it.

No, have not tried that yet. Blender can do it, it is called a Fresnel effect, and blender has a special setting for it. And I think just splinting the objects may make reflections more realistic.

Fresnel effect is reflection based on angle, like reflection in water, at one angle it looks like a mirror and at another it looks completely non reflective and everything in between
